Let me start by saying that I am an unashamed huge fan of the 70’s group ABBA, so one refrain, one chorus, will always make me smile.
Let me also say that I’m a big fan of the musical. The story isn’t the most convincingly original tale, but it was fun and engaging, very lighthearted.
Now the movie. I though, first off, it was miscasted, mainly the characters of elder girlfriends. I would have definitely casted Michelle Pfieffer or Kim Cattrall as Tanya. Meryll Streep was ok, but not completely a knockout performer/singer. I did, however, enjoy Amanda Seyfried as Sophie, a better choice as the hippie free falling bride.
The acting was a bit overdone, as was the overused giggling. Every man in the movie was also over-emasculated, which made it even more flaccid…but overall, ABBA’s music saved it.
And yes, unashamedly, I’d include this in our DVD collection. Ya, I said it.
